Milan Tourist Tax 2026: Rates, Exemptions and How to Pay
The Milan tourist tax in 2026: official rates since April 1, why they are so high, exemptions, how you pay and what may change in 2027.

The Milan tourist tax (imposta di soggiorno) is the highest of any Italian city we track: up to €12.00 per person per night in a 5-star hotel and €9.50 in B&Bs and short lets. Hotels have no cap on the number of nights, but guests under 18 pay nothing. The 2026 rates rest on rules that apply to 2026 only, so they may fall in 2027.
Last updated: October 20, 2026. We also checked the rates on the official City of Milan sources linked below. Since rates change, we update this page whenever the city does.
Milan tourist tax 2026 at a glance
- Hotels: €3.00 (1★) to €12.00 (5★) per person per night since April 1, 2026.
- B&Bs, guesthouses, holiday apartments and short lets: €9.50.
- Maximum: no cap in hotels; holiday homes and apartments stop charging from the 15th consecutive night (the city does not say whether this covers short lets).
- Exempt: everyone under 18, plus the other groups listed below.
- Why so high: a national law allowed extra increases for 2026 only.

How much is the Milan tourist tax per night?
Milan reset its rates on April 1, 2026: 4- and 5-star hotels went up, while 1- to 3-star hotels went down. The table shows the rates in force since then.
| Type of lodging | Per person, per night |
|---|---|
| Hotel 5★ | €12.00 |
| Hotel 4★ | €10.00 |
| Hotel 3★ | €7.00 |
| Hotel 2★ | €4.00 |
| Hotel 1★ | €3.00 |
| Tourist residences 2★ / 3★ / 4★ | €4.00 / €7.00 / €10.00 |
| B&Bs, guesthouses, inns, holiday apartments and short lets | €9.50 |
| Holiday houses (case per ferie) | €7.00 |
| Youth hostels and campsites | €3.00 |
We took these figures from the City of Milan decision no. 144 of February 12, 2026, so you can check them yourself. From January 1 to March 31, 2026, for example, 5-star hotels charged €10.00 and 3-star hotels €7.40.
How much will you pay in total?
So what does the tax add to a typical stay? We calculated these examples from the official rates:
- A couple, 3 nights in a 4-star hotel: 2 people × 3 nights × €10.00 = €60.00.
- A couple, 7 nights in a 3-star hotel: 2 people × 7 nights × €7.00 = €98.00.
- A family with two teenagers under 18, 3 nights in a B&B: only the 2 adults pay, so 2 × 3 × €9.50 = €57.00.

Who is exempt from the Milan city tax?
The City of Milan lists these exemptions on its tourist tax page:
- everyone under 18;
- young people up to 30 in youth hostels run for social, cultural or educational purposes;
- relatives or companions of patients in hospitals in the province of Milan, and patients continuing treatment after discharge;
- university students up to 26 enrolled in Milan;
- people with disabilities and their companions;
- police and armed forces on duty, and Civil Protection volunteers during emergencies;
- guests of holiday homes and apartments from the 15th consecutive night.
How do you pay the tourist tax in Milan?
You pay the tax to the hotel or host, who must show it separately on your receipt. Most exemptions need a self-declaration form, which the property provides.
However, we found no official statement on booking platforms collecting the tax in Milan. So expect to pay at the property.
Why is the Milan tourist tax so high in 2026?
A national budget law allowed Italian cities to add up to €2 per night in 2026. In addition, a decree for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics allowed towns near the venues a further increase, for 2026 only. Milan used both, according to its February 2026 decision.
The Milan rates apply only inside the city. Towns nearby, such as Sesto San Giovanni or Rho, set their own.
Will the Milan tourist tax change in 2027?
Nothing is decided for 2027 as of October 20, 2026. Because the 2026 increases rest on rules that apply to 2026 only, rates could fall in 2027. In July 2026 the city’s budget councillor said so in an interview, but no decision has followed. So check back before you travel, because we update this page when the city sets its 2027 rates.

Since the rate depends on the type of lodging, a 3-star hotel costs €2.50 less per person per night in tax than a B&B. You can compare hotels in Milan on Expedia, or read our Milan itinerary.
