Dolomites tours depend on two choices more than on any single operator: where you start and when you go. For example, a day trip from Venice and a week of guided hiking are very different trips. In addition, summer and winter turn the same valleys into two separate destinations. This guide puts those choices in order, with the access rules that now shape a visit.

The short answer: with only Venice as a base, a guided day trip is the realistic option. However, expect most of the day on the road. With two or more nights, base yourself in Bolzano, Val Gardena or Cortina and choose shorter tours from there. In summer, check the reservation rules for Lago di Braies and the Tre Cime road before you plan a route. In winter, the Dolomiti Superski pass and the Christmas markets in Bolzano and Merano set the agenda.

How we sort these options: by starting point, season and traveler type, not by ranking individual companies. As a result, you can apply this table to any operator you compare.

Why the Dolomites need a plan

The Dolomites are a group of mountain systems in northeastern Italy, spread across the Veneto, South Tyrol and Trentino. UNESCO inscribed them as a World Heritage Site in 2009. The listing covers nine areas and 18 peaks above 3,000 meters, says the UNESCO World Heritage page (checked September 2026).

That spread matters for tours. For example, Lago di Braies, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Seceda and the Sella group sit in different valleys. As a result, one day cannot cover them all. Instead, pick one area per day and build around it.

Day trip from Venice or a stay in the mountains?

This is the first decision for most Dolomites tours. Venice is the closest major arrival city for the eastern Dolomites, but the mountains are still a long drive away. Also, the scenery starts only after you leave the plain.

When a day trip from Venice makes sense

A day trip works when Venice is your only base and you have one free day. In that case, a guided Dolomites day trip from Venice removes the driving, the mountain roads and the parking. The trade-off is time: you get a first look at the peaks and a few stops, not a hike. Before booking, check which area the tour visits, because routes differ.

Also compare our list of the best day trips from Venice, which includes shorter options. For instance, a Prosecco Hills wine tour from Venice covers the foothills in a shorter day.

When staying is better

Stay at least two nights for early light on the peaks, a real hike or time on the lifts. Then short tours from your base replace the long transfer. Moreover, you can react to the weather, which changes fast in the mountains. A day trip, by contrast, runs whatever the forecast says.

Choosing a base: Bolzano, Val Gardena or Cortina

Your base decides which Dolomites tours are easy and which are long. Each option suits a different traveler:

  • Bolzano: a city on the main rail line through the Alps, with museums, restaurants and year-round life. It suits train travelers and winter market visits.
  • Val Gardena (Ortisei and nearby villages): the gateway to Seceda and the Sella group. It is well placed for hikers in summer and for skiers in winter.
  • Cortina d’Ampezzo: the best-known resort of the Veneto side, close to the Tre Cime and Lago di Braies. It co-hosted the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics in February 2026.

Merano, meanwhile, is a spa town at the western edge of the region. It works well for a winter trip built around markets and wellness rather than peaks. Driving between bases? Then read our guide to driving in Italy first.

Summer Dolomites tours: lakes, peaks and ridges

Summer is the high season for hiking and scenic Dolomites tours. However, the most famous spots now have access rules. So check them before you book.

Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee)

From July 1 to September 15, 2026, access to the Braies valley between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. was permitted only by public transportation, on foot, by bicycle, or with an online reservation or a valid transit permit. That is the rule set by the local Braies tourist office (checked September 2026). In addition, buses 442 and 439 serve the lake and need advance online booking during the restriction. Confirm the dates each year.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo and the Auronzo toll road

The toll road to Rifugio Auronzo leads to the usual start of the Tre Cime loop. Cars now need an online reservation. The permit lasts 12 hours from the booked entry time and ends when the car leaves, according to the Municipality of Auronzo di Cadore (checked September 2026). The road usually operates from late May to late October, weather permitting. In addition, travelers without a booking can use public buses from Auronzo, Dobbiaco and Cortina. A guided tour that includes the road takes care of this for you.

Seceda

Seceda, above Ortisei, is known for its sharp ridgeline. The cable cars from Ortisei run from May 22 to November 2, 2026, according to the official Seceda site (checked September 2026). However, the site notes that Dolomiti Super Summer tickets do not work on these lifts. So buy a separate ticket online.

Meanwhile, the Dolomiti Superski summer season runs from May 14 to November 8, 2026. The Sella Ronda lifts open from June 13 to September 27, 2026, as the Dolomiti Superski lift pass page shows (checked September 2026).

Winter Dolomites tours: skiing and Christmas markets

Skiing and the Sella Ronda

Dolomiti Superski links 12 ski areas and over 1,200 km of slopes with one lift pass, according to the official Dolomiti Superski site (checked September 2026). The best-known route is the Sella Ronda, a ski circuit around the Sella massif. It links Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Arabba and Val di Fassa. Winter season dates change every year, so check the official site before you fix your travel dates. Non-skiers, meanwhile, can pick snowshoe walks or scenic lifts.

Christmas markets in Bolzano and Merano

The Bolzano market returns to Piazza Walther from November 27, 2026, to January 6, 2027. That date comes from Italia.it, Italy’s official tourism portal (checked September 2026). Similarly, the Merano market runs from November 26, 2026, to January 6, 2027, as the Merano tourist office states (checked September 2026). Weekdays are calmer than weekends. How to choose the right Dolomites tour

Answer these questions in order, and the right format usually becomes clear:

  1. Where are you based? Venice alone points to a guided day trip. Two or more nights in the mountains point to shorter tours from Bolzano, Val Gardena or Cortina.
  2. When are you going? Summer means hiking and scenic routes with access rules. Winter means skiing or Christmas markets.
  3. What is your fitness level? Multi-day hut-to-hut hiking needs real stamina. By contrast, scenic tours with lifts and short walks suit most travelers.
  4. Who is traveling? Families and small groups often get more from a private tour, which can adapt to weather and pace. Solo travelers usually do well on shared tours.
  5. Which spot matters most? Check its access rules first, then choose a tour or a route around it.
