A Lake Como private boat tour is how the lake’s great villas were meant to be approached: from the water, with a skipper who knows which garden to slow down for and a boat that carries only your party. We compared the two private options from Como with the strongest records. The Lake Como Private Boat Tour is rated 5.0 across 116 reviews, from about $1,328 per group. Lake Como Private Cruise: The Real Local Experience is rated 5.0 across 459 reviews, from about $347 per group.

The verdict
Choose by how much of the lake you want. The Lake Como Private Boat Tour is our pick for a first visit: in four hours it reaches Villa del Balbianello and Bellagio, the two names most people come for, with about 40 minutes at each. Also, 114 of its 116 reviews give it five stars.
The Lake Como Private Cruise is the better choice for a shorter, more relaxed outing. It stays on the stretch north of Como, past Cernobbio, Moltrasio and Laglio, and it includes drinks on board. In addition, it has four times as many reviews, 450 of them at five stars, and you can book it for one, two or three hours.
Both leave from the lakefront in Como, both are private, and both can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before the start.
Good to know before you book
Lake Como is long, and Bellagio sits at its center. From Como, only the four-hour tour gets there and back with time ashore. The cruise stays closer to town, on the shore of Cernobbio, Moltrasio and Laglio, so pick it for the villas and the water rather than for Bellagio. If Bellagio is your base instead, our Lake Como boat tour comparison covers shorter private and shared rides.
Which one is for you?
Take the four-hour tour if
- Villa del Balbianello and Bellagio are the reason you came to the lake.
- You want time ashore, including lunch in Bellagio, rather than a ride on the water only.
- Six of you share the cost: at about $1,328 per boat, that comes to about $221 each.
- This is your one big day on the lake.
Take the cruise if
- You want an hour or two on the water with a glass of Prosecco, not a full excursion.
- You are traveling with children, who may enjoy a speedboat more than a villa.
- An anniversary or a special evening is the occasion, and the cruise is the moment.
- Budget matters: the shortest option starts at about $347 for the whole boat.
Who should skip both
Wheelchair users, since neither boat is accessible. Also, the four-hour tour is not recommended for pregnant travelers or people with back problems. And if you only want to see the lake from the water, the public ferries of Navigazione Laghi cost far less; our Lake Como itinerary explains how to use them.
What each price covers
The four-hour private tour
Included: the boat for your party only, with fuel and a private skipper, and bottled water. The route stops at Villa del Balbianello and in Bellagio, about 40 minutes each, and passes the gardens of Villa Melzi, Villa Carlotta, Isola Comacina and Nesso.
Check before you go: the listing is contradictory about villa tickets. It mentions entrance tickets among the inclusions, yet the itinerary marks the Villa del Balbianello admission as not included. So ask the supplier whether the ticket is in your price, and budget for it if not.
The private cruise
Included: the speedboat for your party only, fuel, life jackets, Prosecco, beer, bottled water and soft drinks. The route passes Cernobbio, Moltrasio and Laglio, then Argegno and the gorge of Nesso, with a short stop in Torno, depending on the length you book.
Good to know: small pets are allowed, and infants travel on a lap.
Where each one starts
- Four-hour tour: Como lakefront. The listing gives Villa Geno, Viale Geno 12, and also describes a public pier near Piazza Matteotti, so confirm the exact pier with the supplier after booking. Start times from 9:00 to 18:00, arranged with the supplier.
- Cruise: the floating dock beside Villa Geno on Viale Geno, Como. Look for the speedboat marked “Hercules Lake Como”.

What travelers say
On the four-hour private tour
The 4 hours were thoroughly enjoyable and we were given the choice of where we stopped for lunch. We chose Bellagio, we agreed a time to meet him back to the boat and he was there when we arrived.
Jocelyn_K, July 2026, via Viator
Lake Como is absolutely stunning and it was awesome to experience it in a private boat tour. They provided music, champagne and knowledge of the area.
Abby_G, December 2023, via Viator
On the private cruise
Such an incredible way to celebrate our anniversary.
Kerry_M, March 2026, via Viator
The chilled prosecco and cold beers capped off an incredible afternoon.
David_K, July 2026, via Viator
Reviewers of both boats praise the skippers first, then the villas. However, the four-hour tour carries one older two-star review, from 2023, about a late start and a long wait in Bellagio; the supplier replied that the reviewer had booked with another company.
